Whiteside Newsletter #32 - May 11, 2026
To Our Whiteside Families,
We have an exciting week ahead at Whiteside! Our week begins with the SD38 Track and Field Meet at Minoru Park tomorrow for our intermediate students. We encourage everyone to wear their Whiteside Spirit Wear and cheer on our amazing Whiteside Wolves as they demonstrate teamwork, perseverance, and school spirit. We are also excited to launch our Movathon fundraiser, which will help raise funds for a beautiful new school mural inside our building created by artist Sandeep Johal. Throughout the fundraiser, students will be moving, exercising, and dancing their way toward helping to brighten and beautify our school community. Finally, we would like to remind families that Friday, May 15 is a District Day of Indigenous Learning for all school sites, and therefore there will be no school for students that day.
Thank you for your care and support. You make Whiteside a special community to learn, teach, and play.
Ms. Sara Lai, Acting Principal
The Richmond Board of Education acknowledges and thanks the First Peoples of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language group on whose traditional and unceded territories we teach, learn and live.
FROM OUR WOLFPACK
Division One went on a fieldtrip to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and had a historic tour of the city. Mihir and Evan share their thoughts.
Historic Tour: French speaking pioneers in Vancouver by Evan (div.1)
We started the afternoon near Victoria Square where we met with Monsieur Guibord who would take us around for the day. Mr. Guibord pointed out how it is unfortunate that the city has so many parking lots that make it look much less like how a beautiful city like Vancouver could or should be. We saw many locations, often comparing photos to the current buildings, hearing about their history.

Track Meet on May 11th, 2026 – A new format
All schools will be participating in a revised Track and Field meet format this year. This format will provide opportunities for more students to be involved, and students will be able to participate in all events (not just one or two events as in past years). Students will be organized into grade groups and will rotate through four stations supervised by a staff member: jumping, throwing, running and a rest station.
Jumping | Throwing | Running |
• Long jump (Gr. 4-7) • High jump (Gr. 4-7) • Additional jumping options | • Softball throw (Gr. 4-7) • Shot put (Gr. 4-7) • Discus (Gr. 4-7) • Frisbee throw (Gr. 4-7) &/or • Football throw (Gr. 4-7) With age-appropriate equipment | • Long Distance: • 400m (Gr.4/5s) • 800m (Gr. 6/7s) • Relays: 4x100 (Gr. 4-7) • Sprints:100m (Gr. 4-7) |
CHALLENGE BY CHOICE:
At each station, students can participate in multiple events and can choose if they want to participate in a competitive or recreational group. Open competitive is for students wishing to achieve personal bests and/or reach a performance benchmark, whereas open recreational is more focused on fun, skill development and trying an event with low pressure. Consistent with other Elementary activities, the focus is on individual active participation. Families are encouraged to celebrate their child’s effort and participation, regardless of the result or outcome.
