Professional Learning - January 16, 2026

An action that we have taken to support our school’s learning focus is:

On this day, we were given time and space to reflect and collaborate on our literacy journey at Whiteside.  Our professional learning focused on reading comprehension strategies and our struggling readers.  Working with a Teacher-Consultant, we accessed targeted professional support for our primary and intermediate teams.

Teachers had an opportunity to collaborate in language (French & English) and grade groups.  They reviewed literacy data gathered and created learning plans that directly address the comprehension needs in their classroom.

This action supports our school’s learning focus in the following ways:

This work supports Whiteside’s literacy goals by:

  • strengthening teachers’ collective capacity to teach comprehension explicitly;
  • using data-informed instruction to target student needs;
  • improving alignment of literacy practices across classrooms and programs;
  • supporting differentiated instruction for diverse learners;
  • creating opportunities for ongoing collaboration and professional dialogue; and
  • ensuring students receive intentional support in developing deeper understanding and engagement with text.

Ultimately, this helps build a shared instructional approach to literacy that is responsive, collaborative, and focused on improving student comprehension outcomes.
