Spring Reading Teacher Reflections
At the end of our school year, our Whiteside teachers reflected that consistent school-wide reading assessments and literacy centers were the most frequently mentioned practices for assessing growth in reading comprehension.
Successful strategies for improving student comprehension skills included reading one-on-one, retelling stories, and the daily literacy work routine.
For the next year, teachers expressed interest in implementing Adrienne Gear’s Reading Comprehension Framework, increasing reading conferences, and exploring different reading assessments.
To better support our development of reading comprehension strategies in our practice and for our students, Whiteside will explore:
- Specific resource support during literacy lessons,
- more literacy resources, particularly books and short stories in French,
- Ongoing professional development and teacher collaboration opportunities,
- School-wide scheduling of reading assessments.
